Horned Grebe

Synopsis:
Has a fairly limited breeding distribution in Oregon, generally
confined to eastern Oregon. Most notable are the
records from northwest Harney County (confirmed) and Mt. Hood National
Forest (possible, 6/13/95). The Wallowa County
record is from near a location where the species bred historically.
Habitat Associations:
strongest
Lake/Pond Shoreline & Islands (43486 acres)
Edges of Freshwater Marsh (10293 acres)
Relative Detectability:
Fairly easy to confirm nesting by observing fledged
young accompanying their parents. Builds floating
nests.
Challenge:
Check for breeding at marshy ponds in Wallowas and northern
Cascades.
